Dozens of youth last night clashed with forces in Nowhatta area of Old City during which one person was injured while 35 others were detained by police, official sources and witnesses said.

They said that soon after Taraweeh prayers were over in Jamia Masjid, youth clashed with the forces including police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The forces, in retaliation lobbed teargas and pepper shells and also resorted to pellet gunfire.

Witnesses said due to pellet gunfire, a youth identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Teeli of Ompora in Budgam sustained injuries and was shifted to SKIMS in Soura. “The youth’s right hand and leg were maimed by the pellets,” witnesses said.

The clashes in Nowhatta spread to its adjoining areas after which police “laid a trap” to contain the stone-throwing, witnesses said, police detained around 35 youth.

Official sources confirmed that 35 youth were held by police and are currently lodged in different police stations of the city including Khanyar, Kothi Bagh and Nowhatta.
