In a scathing attack on Kashmir’s pro-freedom camp, NC- Congress candidate for North Kashmir Sharief-ud-din Shariq Thursday accused that the strike was enforced in North Kashmir and that people of the region only boycotted to save themselves from the ‘wrath of stone throwers’.

He also claimed that not much Congress workers voted for him. “It is nothing but a clear hooliganism that prevailed on May 7 in Baramulla. Polling booths were looted and captured. Such a panic was created in North Kashmir that people from various areas preferred to stay indoors,” Shariq told KNS.

“In separatists ko chilo bar pani mae dhob marna chahiyee– they enforced boycott in the region via Gunda raj– boycott call is ok but there you appeal people and doesn’t strip them in public for casting ballot- aren’t the separatists watching all this,” said Shariq, adding that stone pelting was carried out mostly in the areas of NC and that terror was unleashed just to cut party’s vote bank.

Claiming that he will again win the constituency, Shariq stated that he is aware of the fact that not many Congress supporters voted in his favor on May 7. Shariq, however, admitted that this time NC will win the seat with fewer margins as compared to the previous one during 2009. “I don’t have the complete calculations but I have information that not much people voted for NC.”

Interestingly, Congress-NC Coalition candidate for Baramulla Lok Sabha seat Sharief-ud-din Shariq had earlier stated that the Congress in North Kashmir has a ‘limited’ vote bank and that the Congress candidates supporting him are doing good to themselves only.

Shariq had stated the Congress has no strong footing in North Kashmir and the same is an established fact also admitted by the political experts. However, he had expressed optimism that Congress will support him on May 7.
