The injured Army officer who was critically injured during the encounter with militants succumbed to injuries in the District Hospital Shopian, Friday late evening.

Hospital sources said that Major, Mohit had received critical bullet injuries. They added that Army Major died half an hour after he was brought to the hospital.

Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Shopian, Dr Mohammad Ismail confirmed the death of Army Major.

However, police did not confirm the death of Major Mohit. “The officer was critically injured, but his death is not confirmed,” Superintendent of Police Shopian, Showkat Ahmad Shah told Kashmir Life.

SP however said that a militant was still alive at the encounter site and the operation against him was suspended for the night.

“Two militants have been killed but the third is alive who resumed firing after some lull,” SP said.

A fierce gun battle erupted in South Kashmir’s Shopian area on Friday between security forces and militants resulting in the death of two militants and an Army officer.

Earlier police had said that all the three militants inside a residential house had been killed.

Sources said that as the army personnel came near the residential house which was blasted, they faced a fresh firing from the militant side resulting in the death of Major Mohit.
