A man was hit by bullet when officials from police and wildlife allegedly fired upon a wild bear running amok in the Handwara area Monday afternoon.

Sources said Irshad Ahmad Magray was admitted to hospital after police and wildlife officials reportedly aimed their shot at a wild bear and missed, resulting into injuries to Magray, hit by the bullet.

Officials, however, dismissed the reports while claiming that bear had mauled a woman in Gondrazak area of Handwara on Monday.

The woman, Fehmeeda Begum (38), wife of Mushtaq Ahmad Rather was critically mauled by the wild bear, they said. Immediately after the incident, wildlife officials rushed to the spot and fired a tranquilizer at the beast with gun which it reportedly missed. “The bear fled to the woods,” the official told Kashmir Life.
