Expressing strong resentment over the reports regarding the creation of Sainik colonies and the settlement of retired Army personnel there, Democratic Freedom Party chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah Monday said creating such “Israel-type” colonies is totally “unacceptable”.

“Settling the former Indian Army personnel in the state and issuing them plots is unacceptable for the people of Jammu Kashmir,” Shah said in a statement. “To create Sainik colony, 173 kanals of land has been identified near Srinagar airport and the Sainik board has requested the state government to issue further hundreds of kanals for the purpose.”

Shah said the administration should make the issue clear before people and warned it of strong public resistance if any attempt to play with the demography of the state is carried out.

“We’ll never allow such kind of conspiracies against the state succeed at any cost. Similar kind of attempts was carried in Punjab region where 25000 communal people were given arms and ammunition under the name of village defence committees and as such Muslims of the area were terrorized and harassed,” Shah said.

Commenting over Kashmiri Pandits living in Jammu and outside state, Shah said they are entitled to each and every right here the indigenous citizens enjoy. “According to reports, there is not mention of more than 40 Pandit families in application but the administration is exploiting such matters and fulfilling their wicked agendas.”
