SRINAGAR: 14 students studying at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) and 13 pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi have tested positive for Covid-19, as per a report in the Daily Excelsior.

The cases come in the backdrop of recent surge witnessed in the Covid-19 cases with the fear of a third wave looming large and emergence of the new Omicron variant.

The report said that District Magistrate Reasi, Charandeep Singh ordered the closure of SMDVU Katra with immediate effect after the cases were detected.

“Initially one student was found infected at home and his father informed us. Later, 13 more students have tested positive during testing which will continue for couple of more days,” report quoted SMVDU Registrar, Nagendra Jamwal as saying.
The University will function as per the Government guidelines and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), he said.
Meanwhile, among the thirteen pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi who tested positive for Covid19 on their arrival to Katra Railway Station are being treated as per protocol. The report also said that a senior Police officer in the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) has also tested positive in the Jammu region and has been isolated at home.
