A complete shutdown is being observed in Pulwama district of South Kashmir against the alleged harassment of a girl by a cop of Jammu and Kashmir Police. The call for shutdown was given by traders’ federation Pulwama.

Reports said that all shops and markets are closed while public transport is off the roads. However, skeletal movement of private transport was reported from various areas.

A police official said that one person Abdul Jabar from Tral town was injured after he was hit by a stone. “Some miscreants hurled policemen with stone. We fired some tear-smoke shells to disperse them. The situation in the town remained peaceful,” he said.

General Secretary Traders Federation Pulwama, Ghulam Muhammad Malik told CNS that they had a detailed meeting with the police over the unfortunate incident. “The police provided us an FIR copy and assured us that from today no armoured vehicle will be parked outside Shaheed Park in the main market. After the assurances from police that no such incident will occur in future, the traders’ federation decided to call off strike. We have asked all the traders of the district to resume their activity from Wednesday,” Malik said.

Meanwhile, MLA Pulwama, Muhammad Khalil Bandh has demanded stern action against the erring cop so that such incidents don’t occur in future.

Pertinently, violent protests erupted in Pulwama on Monday after an SOG man misbehaved with a girl in the district. The cop was immediately placed under suspension and a case was registered against him in police station Pulwama.
