Union Minister for Telecommunication and Information Technology Kapil Sibbal Thursday assured Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Saifuddin Soz of providing telecom facilities to people living in border areas of north Kashmir.

According to a statement issued to KNS, Soz called up on Kapil Sibal at his residence in New Delhi this morning.

“I invited Sibal’s urgent attention to the plight of the people living in hinterland of North Kashmir due to non-existent Telecom facilities to the people of these areas,” Soz said, adding, “I told  him that the backward areas completely been neglected by the J&K State’s Telecommunication Department include Machil, Keran, Tulail, Gurez and Tangdhar.”

Soz also drew the attention of Union Minister to the fact that these areas remain cut off from the valley for, at least, five months during winter.

“The people there, especially women and children suffer great hardships.  I urged the Minister to take up the matter into his personal consideration and provide these facilities to the people of these backward areas.”

Soz said that he had hoped that the towers for mobile services would be provided to these areas “but my hope had been belied by the utter negligence of the State’s Telecommunication Department.”

“The Minister (Kapil Sibal) assured me that he would personally look into these matters and these services would be provided to the people without any further delay,” he said.

Sibal, Soz said, also accepted his proposal that the Union Telecom Ministry  would immediately conduct survey on the status of the essential services in Keran, Machil, Tulail, Gurez, Tangdhar, so that Union Ministry will take action according to the requirements of the people.
