The department of cardiology SKIMS is soon to be recognized as a “Centre of excellence” for device therapies in India. The department is one of the highest volume centres of intracardiac device implantation and has performed more than 10,000 procedures including pacemakers, intracardiac defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapies.
HOD, Cardiology Dr Nisar Tamboo while giving details said that the department has performed more than 15000 diagnostic and therapeutic coronary procedures and is among the few high volume coronary centres in the country. Complex and high-risk procedures including left main coronary interventions, bifurcation stenting and recanalization of chronic total occlusions are performed on regular basis in the catheterization lab with excellent results. Cutting-edge technologies including Intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS), fractional flow reserve (FFR) assessment and rotational atherectomy are being utilized wherever necessary to optimize the results of various procedures done., A spokesman in a statement said.
The department has also witnessed a spectacular growth of paediatric interventions over a period of time, with over 100 procedures being performed annually with the high success rate which includes percutaneous device closures of atrial septal defects and patent ductus arteriosus, transcatheter interventions of valve stenosis and coarctation of the aorta, he elaborated.
Director SKIMS Dr Omar Javed Shah said that the department of Cardiology SKIMS is the largest cardiac facility in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, catering to nearly half of the cardiac disease burden in the entire state. It provides the state of art diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac care to the patients and is comparable to the reputed cardiac centres in the world. He appreciated the faculty for its concerted efforts to provide the patients excellent services who otherwise have to go outside for costly procedures.
It is important to mention that the department has also excelled in the field of research with more than 100 research articles published in high impact international cardiology journals. Technological innovations like “Microwave Assisted Axillary Venepuncture For Intracardiac device Implantation” and “ Use of 3D Alpha Curve Stylet in Pacemaker Implantation via Left Superior Venacava” have been recognized and appreciated globally.
