Dar Yasin, a Kashmir-based photojournalist associated with the Associated Press (AP), has been awarded for his coverage with a team of eight photojournalists from AP from Overseas Press Club’s “Hal Boyle Award” for best newspaper, news service or digital reporting from abroad, for their reporting on the exodus of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar.
Dar said that AP documented the methodical rape of Rohingya women by the country’s armed forces, revealed the army’s killing of Rohingya women and children, and told the story of a desperate young father who tried to save his family by fleeing. The Hal Boyle Award is named for the AP columnist who earned a Pulitzer in 1945 for his distinguished World War II reporting.
This is Dar’s third award this year, earlier he was honoured with prestigious Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar award and NPPA’s Humanitarian Award, which is given to an individual for playing a key role in the saving of lives or in rescue situations.
Dar’s work from Rohingya exodus was among the top pictures on 2017 in almost all news portals. His picture from a funeral in Kashmir made it to the Top 10 pictures 2017 in TIME magazine. Dar is a decorated photo-journalist whose work has brought him dozens of national and International awards.
