In a significant development, the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has come up with Superior Approach Technique for the treatment of periampullary and pancreatic head tumours.

According to the SKIMS Public Relations Officer, the land mark contribution has come from a surgical team headed by Dr. Omar Javed Shah, Professor and Head Department Surgical Gastroenterology. The experts see this as one of the rarest techniques developed out of indigenous efficiency and expertise.

“The pancreatic tumours are mostly treated with conventional surgical method called Classical Whipple’s Technique which is inherently complex and associated with high morbidity and mortality besides being a time consuming procedure. The Superior Approach technique introduced by SKIMS specialists is simple in use and has significantly reduced blood loss, operative time and mortality rate. This operative technique has provided excellent results and has been used with minimal Institutional resources”, the PRO said in a statement to KNS.

“Dr. Omar Javed Shah recently presented the New Operative technique at IHPBA- International Hepato-Pancreatic Biliary Association Mid-term Congress which was attended by experts  across the country. The experts appreciated the innovative procedure which has international ramifications and acknowledged it as a major contribution to patient care system from SKIMS”, the statement said.

“The new technique has already been accepted for publication by the prestigious International journal (HPBD-International) and will be freely available on the next month. Dr. Omar Javed Shah said that the Procedure is simple and cost effective as against classical Pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD)  and expressed hope  that  the technique will be adopted in other parts of the country in particular and world in general”, it added.
