SRINAGAR: In a significant stride towards combating prostate-related ailments, Dr Khalid Zaffar Masoodi, a scientist at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Kashmir (SKUAST-K), has bagged a patent for his functional food helping fight Prostate Cancer and related health issues.

Masoodi’s laboratory had filed for the patent some time back for its Magic Food Taxo, a food supplement. The research on the food was funded by the DST. The food contains molecules effective against improving prostate-related health by directly targeting the Androgen Receptor, a key gene in Prostate cancer progression. Masoodi laboratory screened around 400 medicinal herbs and crops of and identified 16 anti-cancer molecules, with five originating from underutilised edible sources consumed in Kashmir for centuries.

Magic Food Taxo has been clinically proven to alleviate symptoms related to Prostate Cancer, Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BHP), and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS). His laboratory has already got three patents.
