SRINAGAR: The police have recovered the service revolver of the slain DySP Mohammad Ayub Pandith from Jamia Masjid belt, Chandigarh newspaper Tribune reported. The weapon was used by the officer to fire a few bullets that left two persons injured and went missing.

“The sources said a SIT member received a call from an unknown number and were told that the revolver wrapped in a newspaper had been kept at a specific place in old city,” the newspaper reported on Friday. “The SIT raided the spot and recovered the weapon.”

The lynching of the police officer is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). “Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the police had identified nearly two dozen people involved in the lynching and arrested many among them,” it added.

The newspaper quoted police sources saying the police is getting lot of cooperation from the people.

On Friday, police had appealed people to help them in identifying the killers of the 57-year old police officer. The officer, a resident of an old city locality, was deployed on “access control duty” during which he was lynched by a crowd of youth who suspected him to be a police spy.

The shocking incident took place dring the Lailat-ul-Qadr, two days ahead of Eid. Mirwaiz Umer Farooq has termed the killing a “personal loss”.
