SRINAGAR: Waseem Sarwar, an Indian Army Soldier lost his life during an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Sarwal, associated with the Iqra Football Club of  Bandipora was a talented football player and well-known across the Union Territory.

Waseem Sarwar, a footballer from Bandipora, was among the three army soldiers killed in an encounter in Kulgam district on August 4, 2023.

After joining the Indian Army in 2014, Waseem continued to be involved with his football club and played matches during his leaves. He actively encouraged local youth in his area to participate in sports activities to instill discipline in their lives.

During an encounter in Kulgam on Friday, Waseem, along with two other soldiers, Havaldar Babulal Haritwal and Signalman Vala Mahipalsinh Pravinsinh, lost their lives in the line of duty.

A large number of people, mostly youth, attended the funeral of Waseem Sarwar. His mortal remains were laid to rest in the Dachigam area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. His native village received his remains from Srinagar early Sunday. Thousands of locals.

Waseem, who got married just two years ago, is survived by his six-month-pregnant wife, parents, younger brother, and two sisters.

“Bandipora Police stands in solidarity with the bereaved families in this hour of grief, a salute to the brave hearts for their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty,” Bandipora Police tweeted.
