People from multiple hamlets of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Monday staged a massive protest against the construction work of Central University Campus that according to them has been going on at snail’s pace from couple of years.

The protesters from Gratabal, Zazoona, Yangora, Safapora and Kurhama hamlets blocked the traffic at Boras Chowk resulting in massive traffic jam in the area. “For more than six years now the Central University of Kashmir (CUK), which was established in 2009, has been functioning from rented accommodations at three temporary places. At the proposed site except for few walls and a small university office, not a single structure has come up till now. Only ten per cent construction work has been done so far. The dilly dally tactics adopted by successive state governments has ruined the prospect of district Ganderbal for having a prestigious university,” the protesters told CNS.

“It is really sorry to state that right from the year 2009 this ‘so-called’ University continues to operate from rented accommodations at three different locations – Magarmal Bagh, Sonwar and Zainakote in Srinagar district—which has created a lot of inconvenience for the administration as well as for the students enrolled for higher studies in the university,” they said.

Amid anti-district administration slogans, the protesters did not allow traffic to ply on the roads. Senior police and district officials rushed to spot and assured the protesters that matter will be taken up with the Governor of the State.
