SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has directed all its Gazetted Officers to adopt home composting at their residences and made submission of geotagged photographs a condition for release of their salary for the current month.
According to SMC Order No. 1158 of 2026, issued on October 6, the officers have been asked to segregate biodegradable and wet waste generated at their homes and process it through an appropriate composting method, wherever practicable.
The officers have been given 10 days from the date of issuance of the order to submit geotagged photographs of their home-composting facility or activity to the concerned Zonal Officer or Sectional Head.
The corporation said the measure aims to promote waste management at source, reduce the volume of biodegradable waste transported to municipal processing facilities and encourage decentralised processing of wet waste.
The order requires the composting arrangements to be maintained regularly and kept functional to ensure that the initiative becomes a sustained waste-management practice.
The concerned Zonal Officers and Sectional Heads have been directed to maintain records of compliance and submit consolidated reports to the Municipal Commissioner within the prescribed period.
The SMC said its senior officers were expected to lead by example by demonstrating the feasibility of decentralised waste management.
All Joint Commissioners, the Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineers and heads of sections have been directed to ensure that the order is communicated to all Gazetted Officers and compliance is monitored.
The order, issued by the Secretary, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, has come into force with immediate effect.
