Scores of orchard trees suffered a ‘massive’ damage due to heavy snowfall, received by the valley since Monday. Apple trees in Shopian and adjacent areas suffered damage due to unexpected snowfall. Fruit growers complained that they suffered heavy losses due to snowfall.

Thousands of apple trees can either be seen with broken branches or uprooted. Pertinently, the fruit growers had recently sprayed different sort of oils on their trees.

Abdul Ahad, a fruit grower of Shopian said that the heavy snowfall disposed off all his expectations of good harvest in the coming season. “Government should immediately depute a team of experts to assess the damage caused to fruit trees due to snowfall,” he demanded. Ahad said that a number of trees were badly damaged due to snow.

Official sources said most affected areas were in south Kashmir, particularly Shopian, where snow has damaged fruit and other trees.

Similar complaints have been pouring from Keller, Mastpora, Zoura, Narpora, Manloo, Wathoo, Ganapora, Balpora, Geerwar, Zainapora, Imamsahab, Chitragam, Reban, Imamsahab , DK pora , Vehil kachdora , Daangam, Choudrigund, Meemandhar, Palpora, Gagren, Heerpora, Sedow, Chotipora and from Pulwama, Charar-e- Shrief and Tral where one to two feet of snowfall was recorded.

Meanwhile, in Kawdara area of Srinagar,  family of Abdul Gaffar Kichloo had narrow escape as their two-storeyed house was damaged due to snow.

Reports also said that in North Kashmir’s Kupwara town, two houses were damaged while a school building was damaged in Budgam.
