Snowfall Forces Closure of Key Roads in JK

SRINAGAR: Fresh snowfall has led to the closure of several roads across Jammu and Kashmir, including the Mughal Road and SSG Road. An advisory has also been issued for the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).

The NH-44 remained open for two-way passenger traffic on Saturday, despite heavy rainfall across the region, which caused difficulties for commuters. According to traffic authorities, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) were allowed to move from Jammu towards Srinagar.

A Traffic Department official said that despite the bad weather, passenger traffic was moving in both directions on NH-44 without disruption.

“HMVs have been allowed to move from Jammu towards Srinagar. However, the highway has witnessed heavy rainfall, making the road surface slippery at several locations,” the official said.

He added that commuters have been advised to follow lane discipline strictly and avoid overtaking to prevent congestion and possible accidents.

Regarding the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road and Sinthan Top Road, the official said traffic movement has been stopped and clearance operations are underway.

“These roads will reopen only after clearance and approval from the concerned road maintenance agencies. Until then, no movement is permitted,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Mughal Road, which connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Poonch and Rajouri districts in the Jammu region, remains blocked due to fresh snowfall at Peer Ki Gali.

“There is no traffic movement on the Mughal Road as the area received fresh snowfall, making the stretch unsafe for travel,” the official said.

Authorities have advised travellers to stay in contact with traffic control units and follow regular updates and advisories before starting their journey. (KNO)
