SRINAGAR: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is set to be discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday after recovering from a 26-day indefinite fast undertaken in support of students protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, his team said.
Wangchuk is expected to leave the hospital at around 11.30 a.m. Before returning to his home in Ladakh, he will visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He had also paid homage at Rajghat on June 28 before joining the protest at Jantar Mantar.
The activist joined the agitation on June 28 and remained on an indefinite fast for 26 days. On July 18, he was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital, where he alleged that he was being kept in detention. Following an order of the Delhi High Court, he was later transferred to Medanta Hospital for treatment.
The 36-day agitation, led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), ended on Saturday after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Council of Ministers. The protest, which began on June 20, sought accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and demanded reforms to the examination system.
The CJP subsequently withdrew its agitation, saying it had done so in good faith after Pradhan’s resignation and assurances from the Centre on its remaining demands.
