Following the mysterious killings in Sopore, streets are sans common masses only manned by arms-borne forces. The buzzing Iqbal market is silent. There are neither vendors nor any activity in Bus Stand.
The killings by ‘unidentified’ gunmen have sent shock waves across sections of Sopore masses. The situation is so grim that residents of the area have, temporarily, shifted to their relatives’ or friends’ places. The armed forces have established Nakkas across Sopore while intense frisking and checking is being held in parts of restive Sopore.
Following the baffling bloodletting, Unified Command Meet headed by J&K Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed is in progress in Srinagar Wednesday.
The emergency meeting, chaired by Mufti, is being attended by Dy CM Dr Nirmal Singh besides all the heads of security apparatus of state including GoC 15 Corps, Lt Gen Subrata Saha. The Sopore situation is at top of the agenda of the meeting.
After mysterious killings in North Kashmir, Tuesday late night, unidentified gunmen struck in South Kashmir’s Bijbehara town killing a cop identified as Arif Ahmad, resident of Srinagar’s Safakadal area.
The killing of JKP cop in South Kashmir coincided with grenade attack on a Cell Phone Tower in Sopore, again by unidentified armed men.
The situation turned volatile with Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI), an unknown armed group, attacking Mobile Phone Towers in North Kashmir. However, Hurriyat (G) and Hizbul Mujahideen termed the LeI as “brainchild of Indian agencies” – though LeI later issued a press release batting for its “genuine” existence.
Following attacks and killings in Sopore, the armed forces tightened the security apparatus in Sopore while fear is apparent over the town.
In what could be termed as facing-saving exercise, the authorities Tuesday transferred SHO Sopore and have reportedly installed a SHO from Bandipora as an immediate replacement.
