SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that a windrow composting unit established at the Fruit and Vegetable Market in Sopore is expected to become operational during the upcoming fruit season, with three more such units proposed for other major mandis across the Union Territory.

The details were furnished in a written reply to a question tabled by MLA Sopore Irshad Rasool Kar, addressed jointly by the Departments of Horticulture, Panchayati Raj, Cooperation and Election.
According to the reply, one unit has been set up at Sopore under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) during 2025-26. Officials stated that the trial run of the unit has been successfully completed.
The installed processing capacity of the unit has been pegged at 24 metric tonnes (MT) per day and 720 MT per month, the government said in its submission.
On the broader rollout, the reply stated that three additional units are under consideration for establishment at fruit and vegetable markets in Shopian, Bandipora and Jablipora in the next few years.
Responding to the query on revenue generation, the government informed the House that since the Sopore unit has not been operationalised barring a successful trial run, no revenue has been generated from the sale of compost or any by-products till date. (KNS)
