Residents of Sopore Town and its adjoining areas have alleged that they face harassment at the hands of forces during search operations and patrolling.

Residents of Shuwa, Dooru, Dangerpora, Tujjar, Brath, Mundji, Kralteng and Takiabal areas of Sopore told GNS over phone that they face “extreme inconvenience and harassment” during forces patrolling .

The government forces including police’s Special Operation Group (SOG), army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) intensified patrolling in Sopore and its peripheries after unknown gunmen started spate of attacks against telecom employees as well as civilians.

“We are scared due to continuous forces patrolling. We are not able to venture out from our houses at Sehri and Iftaar time,” a resident of Dooru said.  “Fear is visible on every household of our area,” he added.

Another resident, Muhammad Altaf said: “Due to patrolling, our mothers and sisters feel insecure when we go out for praying in local mosques and as a result we are unable to concentrate on prayers in this holy month of Ramadhan.”

Meanwhile, a senior police officer said that the forces patrolling and search operations are “for the security of common people”. “You are aware about prevailing situation and all these steps are being taken to create secure environment for the common people,” he said.

On being asked about the allegations of harassment, he said: “We will address their concerns.”
