A village head in North Kashmir’s Sopore was killed after he was kidnapped last night by unidentified gunmen, reports said.

The village head – Sarpanch – belonging to ruling National Conference, reports said, was kidnapped late Friday evening around 9 pm.

“Ghulam Mohammad Mir (62) aka Bedar was abducted by six gunmen from his residence in Tarzoo area of Sopore town at around 9 pm,” reports quoting a police official said.

The body of the deceased Sarpanch, who had received bullet injury in the head and abdomen, was found in Shalbagh orchards near Hygam Friday morning.

They added that Mir’s family had lodged a complaint with police following which a search operation was launched to rescue the kidnapped Sarpanch.

The incident took place three days after Sopore Assembly segment went to polls in the third phase of elections in the state.
