SRINAGAR: Police on Thursday identified the slain militants killed in twin south Kashmir encounters. A police spokesman in a statement said that during past 24 hours, two anti-militancy operations were carried out in twin districts of south Kashmir resulting in elimination of 06 militants of the proscribed militant outfit JeM including 02 Pakistani militants.

“Among the killed militants, two militants were involved in gruesome militant attack on Police Bus at Zewan. Incriminating materials and huge cache of arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter sites” said the spokesman.

“In Anantnag, based on specific input generated by Police regarding presence of militants in Nowgam Dooru area, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 19RR and 164Bn CRPF in the said area,” he said.

The statement said that during the search operation, as the presence of militants was ascertained they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the initial exchange of fire, four security forces personnel including a policeman received gunshot injuries. They were evacuated to hospital for treatment of their injuries however, one Army Jawan succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom. In order to evacuate the trapped civilians around encounter site, the operation was halted till safe evacuation of all the civilians.

The spokesman in a statement further said that iwqn the ensuing encounter, 03 militants of proscribed militant outfit JeM were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. They have been identified as Sultan @Rayees @Mavia (a foreign militant), Nisar Ahmad Khanday resident of Dudwangan Kapran and Altaf Ahmad Shah resident of Nathipora Dooru.

As per police records, all the killed militants were part of group involved in several crime cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities. Several crime cases were registered against them including attack on family of a police personnel at Kokagund in which his wife and daughter received injuries, he said.

He added that a joint press conference was held at 2-Sector Hqrs Wuzan by GoC 15 Corps Commander Lt. Gen. DP Pandey, IGP Kashmir Shri Vijay Kumar-IPS and other officers. On the occasion, IGP Kashmir said that, the killed militants Altaf and Pakistani militant Sultan @Rayees @ Mavia along with another militant Suhail Rather were involved in the gruesome militant attack at Zewan Srinagar, in which 03 policemen attained martyrdom and 11 police personnel were injured.

Similarly, in Kulgam, based on specific input generated by Police regarding presence of militants in Mirhama area, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 9RR and 18BN CRPF in the said area, said the spokesman.

During the search operation, as the presence of militants got ascertained, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, 03 militant of proscribed militant outfit JeM were got killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. They have been identified as Shahid @Shahzaid resident of Pakistan (a foreign militant), Mohammad Shafi Dar resident of Tral and Uzair Ahmad resident of Mirhama.

As per police records, the killed foreign militant Shahid listed among the top most wanted militants operating in J&K while as the other two killed militants were also categorized militants linked with proscribed militant outfit JeM. As per police records, the killed militants were part of a group involved in several crime cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities.

Incriminating materials, huge cache of arms & ammunition including 02 M-4 rifles, 04 AK-47 rifles were also recovered from the sites of encounters. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation. Police have registered cases in both the incidents under relevant section of law in respective police stations and further investigation is in progress.
