South Kashmir: Suspected OGW Detained After Facial Recognition Alert

   

SRINAGAR: A suspected Over Ground Worker (OGW) was detained at the Nunwan Base Camp of the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra after the Facial Recognition System (FRS) deployed by Anantnag Police generated an alert during security screening, police said on Saturday.

According to police, the alert was triggered at the X-ray screening point at the Nunwan Base Camp, following which security personnel intercepted and verified the individual.

The detained person was identified as Mohd Iqbal Wani, son of Ali Mohammad Wani, a resident of Hajin in Bandipora district. Police said the verification process confirmed him to be an Over Ground Worker (OGW), following which he was taken into custody for further legal proceedings and investigation.

Police said the interception underscored the effectiveness of the Facial Recognition System, which forms part of the multi-layered security arrangements put in place for the safe and secure conduct of the annual pilgrimage.

According to Anantnag Police, the FRS has strengthened real-time surveillance, enhanced access control and enabled prompt identification of potential security threats during the Yatra.

Police reiterated their commitment to leveraging modern technology and maintaining a robust security framework to ensure the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra remains safe, peaceful and incident-free.
