SRINAGAR: In yet another incident of a bureaucrat succumbing to the ragging virus, Dr. Shamim Ahmed Wani, a 1999 batch KAS officer, currently posted as Special Secretary Finance, who had also previously served as DC Kulgam, succumbed to the virus. He was 54.

Dr Shamim Wani, a senior Jammu and Kashmir government officer, has died of Covid-19 at Jammu.

“Just received a shocking news that Dr. Shamim Ahmed Wani KAS Special Secretary Finance, Ex DC Kulgam⁩, passed away due to COVID,” Aamir Ali shared the brief information on his WhatsApp. Reports sad he breathed his last at 11:30 am at GMC Jammu, where he was admitted some days back.

A resident of Pandach in the Srinagar periphery, Shamim was one of the best public finance managers in the Jammu and Kashmir government. Barring two years in administration as DC Kulgam, he has remained to shuttle and serving the finance departments and was very positive, polite, and helpful.

His friends said he is survived by his wife, a dental surgeon, and a daughter who has just been enrolled for graduation. His sister; a widow, was also almost dependent on the officer. The family has left Jammu and is on way to Srinagar.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary, B V R Subrahmanyam, expressed profound grief over the sad demise of senior KAS officer, MrShamim Ahmad Wani, who passed away this morning at Government Medical College & Hospital, Jammu due to COVID complications.

Expressing solidarity with the bereaved family members of the officer, Chief Secretary prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to near and dear ones to bear this irreparable loss.

CS Condoles

Chief Secretary remembered Shamim as a dedicated, soft-spoken, and well-meaning officer who served with commitment in his capacity as Deputy Commissioner, Kulgam, Special Secretary, Finance and Commissioner, State Taxes among others.

NC Condolence

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Party President, Member of Parliament from Srinagar and Vice President Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed profound grief and shock over the demise of the Special Secretary Finance department and former DC Kulgam Shamim Ahmed Wani.

The duo prayed for peace to the departed and much-needed strength to the departed to bear the inconsolable loss. Party General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani, Provincial Secretary Showkat Mir, Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar, and YNC PP Salman Ali Sagar have also expressed grief over the demise of Shamin Wani, prayed for peace to the departed soul and much-needed fortitude to the bereaved family to bear the inconsolable loss.

Shocked Colleagues

The news of the sudden demise of senior KAS officer and Special Secretary, Finance, Mr. Shamim Ahmad Wani was received with shock and disbelief, much among the KAS fraternity, his colleagues, and subordinates.

KAS fraternity and colleagues of late Shamim Ahmad Wani recalled his services, employee-friendly attitude, and helpful nature in dealing with the issues. They described him as a capable officer who always took a keen interest in solving the issues and problems of his subordinates. “He was an outstanding officer and an equally good human being. We have lost a valued colleague. The services rendered by him would be remembered for long times to come”, said a KAS officer.

The colleagues and officers, who have worked with the late Shamim Ahmad Wani, remembered him as a dedicated, soft-spoken, and well-meaning officer who served with utmost commitment in every assignment he was charged with. In his loss, they said, J&K has lost a brilliant officer with utmost commitment, dignity, and grace to duty.

At present, Special Secretary, Finance, Shamim Ahmad Wani also served the J&K administration as Deputy Commissioner, Kulgam, Executive Director, J&K Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation, and Commissioner, State Taxes Department besides other assignments.

They prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the kin of the deceased to bear with this loss.

Tarigami Condoles

While expressing condolences with the families of Dr. Shamim Ahmad Wani, Special Secretary to Government, Finance Department and Parshotam Lal, Deputy Director Prosecution, both of whom died due to Covid-19, CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami Saturday urged the government to take immediate steps to control the further spread of the pandemic.

In a condolence message, he extended solidarity with the bereaved families of Shamim Ahmad Wani, who also served as Deputy Commissioner Kulgam and Parshotam Lal, of R S Pura, Jammu, who had joined Police Headquarters a few days back as DDP.

He remembered Shamim Ahmad Wani as a dedicated, soft-spoken and well-meaning officer who served with commitment in his capacity as Deputy Commissioner, Kulgam.

He also said there is an immediate need to augment health infrastructure in J&K, which includes ICU beds, ventilators and other essential medicines as Covid-19 was spreading like a wildfire. Besides, there is also a need to accelerate vaccination drive and cover the maximum population at the earliest. There are reports of vaccine shortage as well which needs to be redressed on the priority.
