SRINAGAR: Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped a former Special Police Official (SPO) from a Shopian village, reports confirmed by police said.

Identified as Shakoor Ahmad Parray, he was in his mobile shop in Kundalan village when some young men came in a car and took him along with. The family has informed the police about the kidnapping.

Parray was an SPO who was attached with SDPO Bejbehara when he took away four service weapons and fled on January 17, 2016. Much later, the police said they have recovered the weapons. Police had registered a case under section 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) and 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the RPC and section 7/25 of the Arms Act against Parray. He was arrested and jailed for almost half a year. Earlier, he was part of the security detail of a DySP who survived a militant attack.

After he was set free, he set up a mobile phone shop in his village and would earn his livelihood. On Tuesday, after the Maghrib prayers, some unknown people kidnapped him. There has not been any scuffle between the two parties, however.

Kundalan is a village located on the road connecting Shopian with Anantnag. It witnessed a fierce gun battle early this year.

Police in Shopian said the family has approached them and informed about the incident. They had nothing more to share.
