With trade of spurious dugs “continuing unabated” in Jammu and Kashmir, a faction of Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Tuesday said that “nothing is being done to curb the menace”.

Alarmed by the reports of “widespread presence” of these drugs, President DAK in a statement said, “J&K has turned to be safe bastion for trade in spurious and substandard drugs. Every day patients suffer and even die because of this menace.”

“In a recent report, an anti-diabetic drug, Blisto-4MF, manufactured in Jammu was found spurious and the quantity of drug was found nil in the sample taken,” the doctors’ body said, “in another report, three injections, namely Dicloliv, Phenergram B and Lezon lifted from Sopore and Baramulla, after public uproar, were declared spurious.”

Another antibiotic drug, metronidazole continued its use in Kashmir hospitals for 4 months after being declared substandard, the statement alleged, “it is ironical that Lotika Khujaria who was involved in the purchase of Fake drug Maximizin is heading drug department. There is substantial evidence to prove her complicity in the purchase and supply of spurious drug. Despite being indicted and cases against her are pending in courts she was given plump post.”

2, 65000 Maximizin tablets were issued by various government hospitals to patients across the state, out of which 2, 30, 000 were consumed.

The statement informed that in 2007 head of china’s drug administration was hanged for his involvement in substandard drug but in “JK perpetrators are let off and promoted. There is a deep rooted nexus between drug department and drug mafia that pumps massive quantities of spurious drugs in the state.”

“JK has become a gold mine for spurious drugs as the market is unregulated and unchecked. People have lost confidence in drugs and healthcare system because on ground nothing has changed and no serious efforts have been made to weed out the menace of spurious drugs,” the DAK president added.
