SRINAGAR: The Traffic Police Headquarters, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday issued a detailed traffic advisory for August 6, informing commuters that traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and several other routes will remain regulated due to road maintenance, ongoing repair works and the Amarnath Yatra.
According to the advisory, traffic on NH-44 will operate in a regulated manner, with movement depending on road and weather conditions. Authorities said single-lane traffic is currently in place at several vulnerable stretches, including Marog and Kishtwari Pather, while maintenance and repair works are underway at multiple locations.
The traffic police advised commuters to undertake journeys on NH-44 only after confirming the latest road status from the Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar or Ramban. Real-time updates are also available through the traffic police’s social media platforms and helpline numbers.
Passengers have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel between Jammu and Srinagar during the day, particularly in view of the Amarnath Yatra convoy movement. Security forces, emergency vehicles and vehicles carrying perishable goods will receive priority wherever required.
Authorities also advised tourists and local residents travelling in private vehicles between Jammu and Srinagar to use the old Mughal Road instead of NH-44 to reduce congestion. However, the route remains subject to weather conditions and traffic restrictions.
Commuters travelling to destinations such as Batote, Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and adjoining areas have been advised to use the old NH via Patnitop instead of the Nashri-Banihal tunnel route.
The advisory warned against night travel on the Doda-Kishtwar road due to the risk of shooting stones and landslides triggered by monsoon rains. People have also been asked to avoid stopping at landslide-prone stretches, particularly near Dalwas and the Mehad-Cafeteria area on NH-44.
For August 6, traffic on NH-44 will follow a regulated schedule. Subject to fair weather and road conditions, passenger vehicles and private cars will be allowed from both Jammu and Srinagar after designated cut-off timings. Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) carrying essential commodities and fuel will also be allowed in a regulated manner after assessing the prevailing traffic situation.
Traffic police said convoy movement for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra will receive priority, and civilian traffic may be halted temporarily at various locations to facilitate smooth passage of pilgrimage convoys.
The advisory also covered other major routes, including the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road, Mughal Road and the Srinagar-Leh Highway. Movement on these roads will remain subject to weather conditions, road surface stability and clearance by the concerned authorities.
The Traffic Police urged commuters to follow official advisories, avoid overloading vehicles, maintain lane discipline and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before undertaking long journeys. Authorities also appealed to motorists to refrain from overtaking and to cooperate with traffic personnel to ensure safe and smooth movement across the Union Territory.
