The Srinagar Ladakh highway will be opened for vehicular traffic by March 31, 2013, much earlier as compared to previous years.

The information was given to the acting Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC, Kargil, Haji Ghulam Amir by the BRO authorities on Monday.  The acting CEC inspected the highway at Shiatani Nala, 35 Kilometers away from Drass to Srinagar to review the pace of progress on snow clearance work along the highway at Zojila.

Due to snow fall and snow avalanche in Zojila area, the Srinagar Ladakh highway, the life line of Ladakh, remains blocked for winter months.

The BRO authorities informed that the road will be opened one month earlier than of last year. In the previous year it was opened on April 26. The BRO authorities said that sophisticated machines have deployed on snow clearance along with experienced engineers and skilled operators and labours. The CEC and Deputy Commissioner appreciated the working stall of the BRO officers, dozer operators and laboures for displaying added workmanship and endeavour’s for snow clearance.

The deputy commissioner said that adequate ration stock of PDS was available at all ration stores but yet people are facing for fresh vegetables, fruits, meat and other essentials. The early opening of road will give advantage to the business man, students and patients he added.        Later, the team inspected various educational and health institution of Drass block and reviewed their functioning. They also convened a meeting of public representatives at Drass and assessed various problems being facing by the people and spot instruction were given to the concern agencies for early redressal.
