A joint state level convention of trade unions was held in Jammu Club Jammu on Thursday as part of the preparations for the two days general strike on February 20 and 21 in which hundreds of activists representing state level organizations and Central Trade Unions including INTUC, CITU, AITUC, Insurance Sector and Banking sector participated.
As per a statement the convention was presided over by Sham Prasad Kesar Senior leader of CITU Thakur Raghubir Singh Chib, General Secretary, INTUC acted as Stage Secretary.
While addressing the gathering Om Parkash, general secretary & Romesh chand (CITU) NK Dogra, President & Balkar Singh Vice President (AITUC), Pawan Gupta & Dalip Koul ( AIIEA), Ashwani Pardhan & Arun Kumar Gupta (Banking Sector) and Ajay Sharma & Amrik Singh, (INTUC) emphasised the need for united struggles to resist the onslaughts bestowed upon the working class by the union government and spoke in detail on the issues involved in the strike and the apathetic attitude of the governments towards the problems faced by the workers and the common people. They narrated the developments since the last two years and on the growing unity among the central trade unions and urged upon the participants to preserve the unity achieved at the national level and take it to the grass root level to make the strike a resounding success. They further said that it will be first 02 days countrywide historic general strike.
Others spoke on this occasion Parminder Kumar (AITUC) Anil Vaid (BANKS) and K K Sharma (Railways) said that the small streams of movements and struggles of different trade unions in different sectors now merged into a big flow which the government could not prevent. They emphasized the need to intensify the struggles to reverse the anti worker policies of the government, in which the 02 days general strike would be an important mile stone.
At the end a resolution on the demands of the strike and calling for effective preparations was placed by Sham Parsad Kesar of CITU and Seconded by Thakur Raghubir Singh Chib of INTUC, which was unanimously adopted. It was decided that a massive rally will be organized on 21th February, 2013, the second day of general strike and also decided to conduct joint preparatory campaigns in all the districts, towns, industrial centers and workplaces. The convention in one voice resolved to take the unity to the grass root level.
