Expressing surprise over the acquittal of self-styled faith healer Gulzar Ahmad Bhat alias Gulzar Peer by a local court, spokesman of the Mutehda Majlis-e-Ulema and Majlis-e-Tahafuz-e-Iman said that court judgment has come as a surprise, raising questions in the minds of the people.

“There was ample evidence like documentary proof, accounts of victim girls, medical reports, indictments by all the religious bodies which proved that Gulzar was involved in exploitation of girls,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said even though the fake faith healer has been rearrested by police after public furore and protests by the victim girls, it is important that justice is delivered in this case to bring the guilty Gulzar to justice. He said that justice in such public cases was also important so that confidence of the people in the fair play of judiciary is not shaked.

The spokesman said that there is a need to look into the case carefully at the appellate level. “It was important that in this case, transparency, justice and fair play being exhibited. If justice is not delivered, it would have far fetching negative impact on the Kashmiri society, which is already reeling under different societal issues,” the spokesman said.

He also appealed the investigating agencies of Kashmir to stop abetting fake faith healers like Gulzar who are promoting immorality in the society. “They should professionally address the issue so that the Kashmiri society is protected from the cheats.”

The spokesman said Mutehda Majlis-e-Ulema and Majlis-e-Tahafuz-e-Iman would soon convene a meeting of noted religious leaders and scholars to deliberate upon the issue of sensitive nature.
