SRINAGAR: The Supreme Court has imposed interim restrictions on the use and circulation of audio and video recordings of judicial proceedings, directing that such material cannot be extracted, shared, uploaded, transmitted, modified, stored, hosted or commercially exploited on social media or other digital platforms without prior official approval.
The interim order requires permission from the Secretary General of the Supreme Court of India or the Registrar General of the concerned High Court, as applicable, before any recording of court proceedings is used or circulated.
The directions were issued on July 24 by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana while hearing a writ petition concerning the live-streaming and recording of judicial proceedings.
The Court ordered that the restrictions would remain in force until further orders, covering unauthorised extraction, reproduction, dissemination and commercial use of recordings of court proceedings on digital platforms.
The interim measures are aimed at regulating the use of recordings made available through official live-streaming arrangements and preventing their misuse, while preserving the integrity of judicial proceedings.
The matter is still pending before the Supreme Court, which is yet to adjudicate the broader issues concerning the live-streaming and recording of court proceedings.
