Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services & Sports, Taj Mohi ud Din Wednesday directed the district administration to hold an enquiry into the killing of a youth yesterday at Ganaie Hamam, Baramulla allegedly by an army jawan.

Chairing a joint meeting of civil administration and Army here today, the Minister asked the Deputy Commissioner to make the probe time bound and action oriented. He also directed the release of Rs Five lakh as ex gratia to the next of kin of the killed youth.

Terming the incident as highly regrettable, Taj, who had rushed to the town yesterday evening along with Minister of State for Home, Sajjad Ahmad Kitchloo, after hearing of the incident, expressed sympathies with the bereaved family. He asked Police, army and other security agencies to exercise maximum restraint   while dealing with the situations. He asked the army authorities to adhere strictly to the Standard Operations Procedure (SOPs) while encountering hostile situations.

The Corps Commander, 15 Corps, Lt. Gen. Om Prakash, who also accompanied the Minister, assured full co operation from Army to the civil administration. He expressed regrets over the incident and assured that the force would be and has been a strict complier of discipline and commitment. He said Army, on its own, has also instituted a Court of Inquiry into the incident and whosoever found guilty would be brought to book.

Later, interacting with members of civil society, Taj impressed upon them to play their role in maintaining peace and order in the town and minimizing such unfortunate incidents. He appealed them not to fall prey to the vicious propaganda by vested elements during these difficult times.
