SRINAGAR: CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Thursday raised the issues of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers and ASHA workers in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, seeking enhancement of their honorarium and comprehensive social security benefits.
Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Tarigami referred to demonstrations held by Anganwadi and ASHA workers in Srinagar and urged the government to address their long-pending demands.
He said Anganwadi workers and helpers perform key responsibilities related to child care, nutrition, development and early education, while ASHA workers serve as an important link between communities and the public healthcare system.
Tarigami sought an increase in the Union Territory’s share of the honorarium paid to these workers, saying the existing amount was inadequate in view of the rising cost of living and growing financial responsibilities.
He said Jammu and Kashmir should consider the pattern followed by other states and Union Territories, including Puducherry, Delhi, Daman and Diu, Telangana, Kerala, Haryana and Karnataka, where additional financial support is provided to such workers.
The CPI(M) leader also sought comprehensive social security coverage for Anganwadi and ASHA workers, including pensionary benefits, insurance and other welfare measures.
He urged the government to engage with the workers and their representatives and examine their demands on priority.
Tarigami later raised the issue with media persons outside the Assembly House.
