SRINAGAR: CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Monday urged all members of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to jointly press the Centre for restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir without further delay.
Speaking in the Assembly, Tarigami said Question Hour was an important part of legislative proceedings as it provided members an opportunity to seek answers from the government and hold it accountable on issues concerning people.
He said disruption of Question Hour deprived legislators of an important forum to raise public concerns and seek responses from the government.
Intervening amid slogan-raising by BJP members, Tarigami appealed to legislators across political affiliations to come together on the issue of restoration of statehood.
“The government of India has repeatedly committed to restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, according to a statement issued by the CPI(M) J&K unit.
Tarigami said the legislature itself remained “disempowered” and argued that the prolonged delay in restoration of statehood had added to public disappointment.
He called upon legislators to unitedly raise their voice in support of what he described as a long-pending demand of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
