SRINAGAR

Residents of Tengpora area of Batamaloo Sunday staged demonstrations against the alleged use of force by paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and demanded removal of the bunker in the area.

The protesters told KNS correspondent that CRPF men went berserk without any provocation on Saturday evening. “They (troopers) barged into the houses and broke the windowpanes of many houses and also fired teargas shells,” locals alleged.

The protesters also blocked the Srinagar-Baramulla highway which led to a disruption of traffic for few hours. “Though the CRPF claimed that youth pelted stones on them but there was no provocation at all for such highhandedness. CRPF men threw stones at our houses and damaged the window pans,” a resident said.

They protesters demanded immediate removal of the CRPF bunker from the main Chowk. “It is of no use there. Troopers without any rhyme or reason have beaten the residents and ransacked houses on many occasions in the past,” the residents alleged.

“They will keep on harassing us if their camp and bunker is not removed. We want to live in peace but they (troopers) have made our lives hell,” residents said and threatened that if the bunker will not be removed they will stage massive protests.

The Inspector General CRPF, Atul Karwal said that he will investigate the matter and will see what trouble the residents are facing due to the presence of the bunker.

“The matter has come to my notice. I assure you that I will investigate it. If at all any CRPF a personnel has used force on the civilians he will be dealt severely,” Atul Karwal said.

Asked that the local residents demand the removal of the bunker he said, “I will see what kind of trouble the residents of the area are facing due to the presence of CRPF bunker. Whether the bunker will be removed or not the decision will be taken only after proper assessment.”
