SRINAGAR: Militants shot dead an army man in a Kulgam village. He was identified as Mukhtar Ahmad Malik, a resident of Shurat. Police confirmed the killing. No militant outfit has claimed the responsibility for the killing.

Sources in Kulgam said that a few persons got into the residence this morning and shot him dead inside. He was in his first storey room where he was shot dead. The shootout triggered a crisis and nobody knew who came and who killed, reports said.

Malik, a matriculate has been a known Ikhwani gunman during 1990s. He was operating under the code-name of Mukhtar Goula. Later, he was recruited by the army and given a berth in the Territorial Army.

Police said one of Malik two sons were killed in a road accident in Kulgam on Friday. Identified as Aadil, Malik had come home to mourn his son’s death. “It was his third day a home that he was killed in the morning,” a police source said.

Malik is survived by another son, who is a student, wife, parents and a brother. His brother is a carpenter.

Police said they have registered a case and investigation will take place. It was not immediately known if he was buried immediately.
