Omar appreciated voter turnout and emphasised the importance of keeping democracy alive.

Abdullah was defeated by Sheikh Abdul Rashid, a former MLA currently imprisoned in Delhi’s Tihar jail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), who won by a margin of 2,04,142 votes. Also contending was People’s Conference president Sajad Gani Lone.

”In all the noise & the deep personal disappointment yesterday (and a bit of quiet satisfaction looking at the national results & @JKNC_ victories elsewhere) I overlooked thanking the voters of North Kashmir, especially the ones who voted for me, for coming out & using your vote to make your voices heard. Thank you for making the effort to come to the polling booths & keeping the flame of democracy alive,” Abdullah said in a social media post.

The National Conference succeeded in securing two seats in Kashmir, capturing Srinagar and Anantnag-Rajouri constituencies with significant margins.
