Thousands of people Saturday participated in funeral procession of slain LeT militant Abid Hamid Mir, who was killed in an encounter in Amargarh area of Sopore.

Abid was laid to rest in local martyrs’ graveyard near Jamia Masjid Hajin.

As soon as the body of Abid arrived in Hajin today afternoon, thousands of people from adjacent villages of Sumbal, Naidkhai, Shahgund, Vijpapra, Madvan, Preng, Ajas, Saidunara, Hakbari, Saderkoot rushed to Hajin to participate in the funeral procession.

Abid was a B.Com student of Islamia Collage of Science and Commerce in Srinagar.

Three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed in an encounter with state government forces in Amargrah area of Sopore on Saturday morning.

The killings led to protests in various parts of northern Kashmir. Authorities suspended internet services at some places in Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts, while strict restrictions were imposed in Baramulla town.

Schools and colleges have also been shut for the day by the authorities fearing protests.
