The case emerged after a local shopkeeper reported to the Shopian Police Station that someone had attempted to pay with fake currency earlier this week. Following the complaint, police launched an immediate investigation, verifying the transaction and identifying those allegedly involved in circulating counterfeit notes.

Searches conducted during the investigation led to the seizure of Rs 79,000 in counterfeit currency from the accused and their associate. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohd Syed Wani of Batpora, Mohd Maqbool Naikoo of Bungam, and Peerzada Altaf of Tukroo Babnad. All three have been formally taken into custody.

Police have registered a case under FIR No. 33/2026 at Police Station Shopian under relevant legal provisions and are investigating to trace the source of the fake currency. Authorities are also examining whether the accused were part of a larger network distributing counterfeit notes in the region.

Police cautioned residents and traders to remain vigilant when accepting cash payments and report any suspicious transactions. They highlighted that small-market traders, who rely heavily on cash, are particularly vulnerable to such fraud.

Investigation into the case is ongoing, with police promising strict action against anyone involved in the circulation of counterfeit currency.
