GACA said Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were targeted in separate incidents on Tuesday and Wednesday. Emergency services and other relevant authorities responded to both attacks.
At Abha airport, two residents — a Moroccan and an Algerian — were killed, while 28 people were injured. The injured included two Saudi citizens and residents of Bangladeshi and Filipino nationalities, with the injuries ranging from minor to serious, according to GACA.
At King Khalid International Airport, a Sudanese national was killed and eight people were injured. The injured comprised five Saudi citizens, two Egyptians and one Pakistani national.
All those injured were taken to hospitals for treatment, GACA said. The attacks also caused material damage at both airports.
The aviation authority said it was coordinating with relevant security agencies to assess the damage and take measures aimed at protecting passengers and airport employees.
Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility on Wednesday for attacks on both airports. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had targeted King Khalid International Airport with drones and Abha International Airport with ballistic missiles and drones.
The attacks came amid heightened tensions involving the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government. Saudi Arabia has led the coalition’s military intervention in Yemen since March 2015.
