A team of Food Safety Officers Monday carried an inspection of various areas of Srinagar city in implementation of various provisions of Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act 2003.

During the inspection some shopkeepers were found selling tobacco products without carrying specified pictorial/health warning as mandated under section 7 of COTPA 2003. During the course of action, tobacco products worth Rs 23260 were seized from two shopkeepers, besides  prosecution against same will be launched in the court within due course of time by the concerned authorities.

Pertinently, the sale of tobacco products without specified pictorial/health warning is punishable under section 20 of the Act with an imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years.

Accordingly, the shopkeeper dealing with sale/supply of tobacco products are warned not to sell tobacco products without pictorial health warning and strict action will be taken against the defaulters.
