Traffic Restored on Jammu–Poonch Highway After Landslide Disruption

SRINAGAR: Traffic movement on the vital Jammu–Poonch National Highway was restored earlier today after heavy rainfall and a landslide had forced its closure in the Kalal area of Nowshera in Rajouri district. The highway, a key link for the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, was blocked on Monday evening after a hillside collapsed, sending mud and debris onto the road.

The landslide brought traffic to a complete halt, stranding commuters and cutting off surface connectivity between several areas. In response, the local administration, aided by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and police, launched clearance operations. Heavy machinery was deployed late last night, and work continued through the early hours of Tuesday to remove the debris.

Officials confirmed that the road was reopened for light vehicular traffic by this morning after the affected stretch was cleared and inspected for safety. Restoration of the highway has brought relief to residents, transporters, and travellers who rely on the route for the movement of goods and essential services.

While traffic has resumed, authorities have warned of possible intermittent disruptions if the rain continues in the coming days. Teams remain stationed at landslide-prone locations to respond quickly in case of further blockages. (KNT)
