In order to aware people of traffic rules in Valley, the department of traffic police has organized a ‘Traffic safety Week’ where locals are advised of following the rules through different programs.

The year 2013 has been dedicated to bikers of Kashmir, said Haseeb Ul Rehman, SP traffic- City. “We want to involve bikers in the event as they are more involved in the accidents. Last year also we had more challans, 15,000 more than other for the bike users.”

In the year 2011, 68 people died of bike accidents and in year 2012, only 60 people died which the traffic department sees as an achievement.

The traffic safety week started from January 1 will last up to January 7. On January 3, the officials organized a cycle rally from Hyderpora to the Sher-e- Kashmir Park in Lal Chowk which was later followed by a street show outside Traffic department office. The street show included skits on road safety by Kashmir’s traditional Band Pather group.

The department is also going to organize various quiz programs, medical camps and other programs to make people aware about traffic rules and to encourage them to follow the rules to avoid road accidents. the Traffic safety week has been organized by traffic department in collaboration with HDFC bank, Peaks company and various other automobile companies.
