Traffic suspended on Srinagar-Leh highway, Kashmir highway open



Traffic on the National Highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, was again suspended on Saturday due to slippery road conditions.

However, the 86-km-long historic Mughal road was through for one-way traffic while light vehicle traffic will ply on Srinagar-Jammu Highway from both sides and heavy vehicles would continue to ply on one-side only, a traffic police official.

He said the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, particularly at Zojila, has become very slippery early this morning due to drop in the mercury during the night. After some vehicles, which were allowed from Drass, got stuck due to slipping, due to which traffic was suspended on the highway, he said, adding as the day progresses and the weather improves, traffic would be resumed, subject to the condition of the road.

He said in the morning, traffic is allowed from Drass side for Sonamarg, Kashmir and later in the afternoon vehicles are being allowed from here to Ladakh every day.

He said one-way light vehicle traffic was allowed on historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region. Today traffic will ply from Rajouri and Poonch to Shopian and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.

Traffic is plying normally on the Srinagar-Jammu highway today also, he said adding that Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) will continue to ply from only one-way.Today HMVs will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no HMV will be allowed from opposite direction, he said. But, he said, passengers, drivers and truckers, are requested to contact TCUs in Srinagar, Jammu and other places before undertaking the journey on the highway. (Agencies)
