SRINAGAR: A family in a Tral village has accused local army unit of a nocturnal raid and assault. They have alleged their daughter was dragged out, triggering a hue and cry and eventually leading to the villagers intervention.

Local news gatherer KNO identified the girl as Ishrat Jan, who has alleged that her clothes were torn before she fell unconscious and was later taken to hospital. The family lives in Sir Jageer village.

The family alleged that their home is routinely being raided. Of the three sons, report quoting the family said, one is in jail for three months. The family has demanded a halt in the raids. They have spoken to media on record and offered details of the nocturnal raid.

Former Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti had tweeted about the incident during the day. “Army from Yagwani camp in Tral ransacked homes & ruthlessly thrashed a family last night. The daughter owing to her serious injuries was admitted to the hospital. Not the first time that civilians from this village have been beaten up by the army in this area (sic),” Mehbooba tweeted.

Police and the army have told the news gatherer that allegations are baseless. “An army night domination party had gone to a village where they spotted two persons near Arapal Nala. The duo were called and were being questioned, Ali Mohammed Chopan and his family came out of the house which was nearby,” it quoted an officer saying. “As they came out, Ishrat Jan feigned fainting while other members started shouting after which other villagers came out and started blaming the army for ransacking the house and beating the girl.”

“Basically, they have links with militancy,” SSP Awantipora Mohammed Yousuf told the news agency. “One of their sons is already in jail after he was arrested in a militancy related case.”
