Tense situation prevailed in restive Habba Kadal on Friday after police fire tear smoke shells to quell the stone pelting protests.

Sources said situation deteriorated at around 12 as stone pelting began after an overnight lull. Pertinently, throughout Thursday, protesters fought pitched battles with police and paramilitary personnel across various parts of city including Habba Kadal.

On Thursday, authorities had put in place severe restrictions around city thus banning Muharram processions. However, dozens of Shia mourners were detained at Batamaloo when they tried to take out march towards Lal Chowk.

Hurriyat leaders have planned to hold sit-in at Nowhatta post Friday congregational prayers against the killing of Zahid Rasool Bhat, one of the victims of Udhampur communal Hindu mob attack on three Kashmiri truckers.

Syed Ali Geelani had called for protests against the thrashing of JKLF chief, Muhammad Yasin Malik and detention of his party leaders.
