A truck driver from Rajasthan was shot dead in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday evening, police said.

A police spokesman in a statement said, “Tuesday around 2000hrs Shopian Police received information about a incident in the village Shirmal, Shopian where militants killled a civilian . Consequently local police reached the spot.”

“Preliminary investigation revealed that militant shot dead a civilian named Sharif Khan of village Uba in district Bharatpur of Rajasthan. The deceased was a truck driver by profession and was in the village for apple loading,” said the spokesman.

“It is learnt that villagers tried to save the civilian in turn militants thrashed the villagers as well and committed this gruesome crime. As per the initial investigation, groups of JeM and HM are behind this r act,” he said.

“In this connection FIR number 151/2019 U/S 364, 342, 302, 307, 459, 435 RPC, 7/27 Arms Act, Sec 16, 18, 20 of ULA has been registered. The investigation is in progress,” said police spokesman in a statement.
