SRINAGAR: The Jammu Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) is yet to respond to the goof-up that led it to declare distinction-holders as failed candidates in the just declared twelfth class results. It issued two notifications correcting the earlier results. In two notifications, the result of 544 candidates was fundamentally altered.

The BOSE came up with a notification Tuesday night, stating that the results of 379 students who were initially declared failed in the class twelfth results have now been changed.

Out of the 379 students, 30 students have secured distinctions and others have passed in either first division or second division, while for some students, the number of subjects that they had failed in has altered.

This development comes after the result of almost 165 students who were declared failed, was rectified on June 13. The rectification declared these students as distinction holders.

While the students applying formally for re-evaluation is a normal exercise post-results, this is for the first time that the BOSE declared results and announced a good number of them as failed, only to rectify it later.

Students, parents and teachers reacted to the errors very strongly. Score of students also protested against the results in Srinagar on Saturday. The students demanded that the board should take the responsibility and take actions. Twelfth class is a career-making year and declaring better-performing students as failed can trigger serious mental issues.

“I passed the exams, though with less than expected marks but my friend was initially declared failing in two subjects but later she was declared passed,” a student from Srinagar said, on grounds of anonymity. “I mean what mockery is going on? Do these authorities realise that people have been suffering; my friend was affected so much she could not even utter a single word upon seeing her result. Are these people okay?”

Some students also took to their social media handles sharing screenshots of their results wherein even after securing the minimum passing marks in a subject, they were declared as ‘failing’.

Some students also shared screenshots comparing their results with that of others. A number of students who scored higher than other were declared failing while the ones with lesser marks were declared as passing. In another case, a student was declared as passing even after scoring less than the passing marks and another student with same score was declared failed.

It is pertinent to mention that students from various higher secondary schools marked their protest against the results of annual examinations of class 12 which were declared last week. The result gazette of class 12 declared on June 9 earlier stated that the passed percentage was only 65 per cent, however, after making the amendments the passing percentage has slightly altered.

Some BOSE officials linked the goof-up with their failure in not getting the practical marks sheets of the candidates from the respective examination centres. “But, why was the result declared if they had not these sheets,” one student said, “How they got these sheets within hours after they declared the results?”

Ideally, the goof-up should trigger a serious investigation if not a police case. By now the BOSE should have acted but it seems they are unwilling to accept the mess they have created for the students.

“The students instead of contacting you should be contacting JKBOSE and settle out their issues,” the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE), Chairman Dr Parikshat Singh Manhas told this reporter on phone. “We are busy with working on to make things better for students. We will appreciate if you value our time.” With this he disconnected the call.
